The Fierce Five, WOWps send-off show

WOWps stands for Women of the World Poetry Slam. It is the newest event from Poetry Slam, Inc (PSI), producers of the National Poetry Slam (NPS) and the Individual World Poetry Slam (iWPS). You are now briefed on poetry slam acronyms.

WOWps is also about to get an infusion of talent from Seattle. Where most cities sent one female poet to represent their slam at the event, Seattle is sending…6!!

Tara Hardy won the WOWps finals and will be our official slam representative, but the tournament still had open spots for any competing women slammers. A brave group of talented women from Seattle all decided to enter the contest and join forces to get themselves there. The are calling themselves The Fierce Five. Go Seattle!

These national/international slam events are amazing on so many levels: our poets hear the best work being produced all over the country, they meet and network with other spoken word artists, they get to try out their work on new audiences. And someone goes home a champion. Careers are made at these events.

The Fierce Five are (in alphabetical order):

eLa Barton

Sara Brickman

Maya Hersh

Jodie Knowles

Jennifer Pritchard

WOWps started because, nationally, there is a wildly uneven balance between men and women compete in poetry slams. I was part of the original (and regrettably named) group called “Slam Sisters,” which first brought this to the attention of the PSI Executive Council in 2002. We talked about all the reasons personally and socially why more women don’t slam, and I’m so impressed that PSI heard the call and started WOWps. At least in Seattle, the trend is reversing. There was only one man in our first semi-final slam of the season. That is almost unheard of country-wide.

I am so excited for a national audience to see what we have going on here in Seattle. These women are so talented and distinct, each in her own voice. I’m super proud of these 5 ladies and encourage you to support them financially and in spirit at their send-off show. Here are the details:
