Upcoming Shows You Need to Know

National Poetry Month (April) is rapidly approaching, and Seattle seems to be responding with a glut of great shows. Here is a sampling of some shows you need to know.

this Thursday! Uneasy Heavens Await Those Fleeing at The Canoe Social Club

Brilliant local poet Jennifer Borges Foster got a grant to gather her favorite poets, musicians, dancers and filmmakers for an epic Seattle arts blowout of new work on an ethereal theme. Local artists like Brangien Davis, Rebecca Brown, Rick Miller, Doug Nufer, Trisha Ready, Amy O’Neal, Sean Nelson and yours truly among MANY others will perform on the line from Jennifer’s erasure poem, “Uneasy Heavens Await those Fleeing.” Starts at 7pm. 21+. (I read around 9p)

Saturday, April 11, YouthSpeaks WildCard Slam at Seattle Art Musuem

sign-ups at 1pm, show at 1:30pm

Youth and adults should attend this annual youth spoken word throw down. Here’s what you need to know: be on time to sign up, this WILL fill up. Any youth 13-19 can enter, have 3 poems ready of 3 minutes each. Three youth will win spots in the finals. All ages, $5 I think.

Monday, April 13 Sherman Alexie at Town Hall

I was just saying to Roberto Ascalon that I am so happy to live in a town where I can go see Sherman Alexie read for $5. Everyone within the range of my typed voice needs to go to this show. Sherman is a force of nature. He will alter your internal chemistry. Yes you, come to this show. 7:30pm.

Monday, April 22 Seattle Poetry Slam Wild Card at Spitfire

The wild card is sometimes the funnest show of the year at the Seattle Slam. We take 16 slammers into a battle royale and hand out 2 spots in the Grand Slam. This year is especially insane with one of the best performance poets in the country featuring, Derrick Brown. Sign-up is at 8:00pm. Show at 8:30. $5

Tuesday, April 23 Cheap Wine and Poetry at Hugo House

True, Brian at Hugo House reminded me to add this one (see comments), but he’s right! This is a wildly good line up for Cheap Wine & Poetry which is already a great concept. Christa Bell, Matt Gano, Judith Roach and Peter Pereira. Get there early and get a seat. The house is usually packed! 7pm

Sunday, April 26 Seattle Poetry Slam GRAND SLAM! at Neumos

This is the big one, where we choose the Seattle Slam Team that will go to Nationals. Our feature is slam legend Patricia Smith. Get your ticket NOW!!! See our website at http://www.seattlepoetryslam.org I will be competing for a spot on the team. $15, 21+

Friday, May 15 YouthSpeaks Finals at Town Hall

If forced to pick a favorite upcoming show, it would probably be this one. If you can come to a YouthSpeaks show and not have your heart stirred, time to see a cardiologist. If you have never been, I guarantee you will leave saying, “How are they doing that?” Our feature this year is the incomparable poet Roger Bonair Agard. (It’s his birthday too!) Plus, I’m hosting. Not sure on the $.
